Melvyn Douglas (1901-1981), American actor, c1930s-c1940s. Born Melvyn Edouard Hesselberg, Douglas often played the suave sophisticate in pursuit of a beautiful woman, as in Ernst Lubitsch's classic Ninotchka (1939) opposite Greta Garbo. He began appearing in supporting roles in the early 1960s and won two Best Supporting Actor Oscars for his roles in Hud (1963) and Being There (1979).
