Sir Charles Hardinge, Sir Arthur Nicolson and General Sir John French, 1908. Charles Hardinge (1858-1944), later Baron Hardinge of Penshurst, was a diplomat who served as British Ambassador to Russia from 1904 to 1905. He was Viceroy of India from 1910 to 1916. Sir Arthur Nicholson (1849-1928) was another prominent diplomat who succeeded Hardinge as Ambassador to Russia. Sir John French (1852-1925) is well known as the first Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War.
