Born a prince of Denmark, he ascended to the throne in 1905 after the union with Sweden was brought to an end. Having originally been known as Prince Carl, he was always called Charles by members of the British royal family. He married his cousin Maud, the youngest daughter of Edward and Alexandra, in 1896.
