Philipp Scheidemann announcing the creation of a new German republic, 9th November, 1918. Scheidemann (1865-1939) speaking from the Reichstag at the end of the First World War. He served as the first Chancellor of the Weimar Republic, holding office from February until June 1919. The republic lasted until the passing of the Enabling Act in March 1933 handed effective power to Adolf Hitler as Chancellor without the need to involve parliament.
