Murad IV, Ottoman Emperor, (1808). Murad (1612-1640) became Sultan in 1623 when he deposed his mentally unstable uncle, Mustapha I. He used decisive and brutal methods to quell the rebellions and corruption that had become endemic within the empire. The last Ottoman Emperor to personally command his army in battle, Murad captured Baghdad from the Safavid Persians in 1638. From A series of Portraits of the Emperors of Turkey, 1808.
