The Spanish capture Fort Caroline, 1565 (1631). Fort Caroline was a settlement established by the Franch near present day Jacksonville, Florida, in 1564. Considering the settlement a challenge to their claim on Florida, the Spanish attacked the settlement the following year and massacred the garrison, only sparing around 50 women and children.
