'The Main Party at Cape Evans after the Winter', Scott's South Pole expedition, Antarctica, 1911. Group portrait of the members of the expedition taken before the polar party set out in October 1911. Captain Scott and four companions reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed on their return by blizzards and running out of supplies, Scott and his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later.
