Columbus 'discovering America', 1492, (c1600). Christopher Columbus meeting the allegorical figure of America, depicted as a woman in a hammock. Sponsored by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, Columbus set out to discover a westward route to Asia. He landed on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, claiming it for Spain.
