Egbert, King of the West Saxons and first monarch of all England, (18th century). Egbert (c770-839) ruled Wessex from 802. His reign saw Wessex overtake Mercia as the dominant Anglo-Saxon kingdom and as a consequence he is regarded as the first King of England although the title was not used until the reign of his grandson, Alfred the Great.
