Collecting water from the Nile, Egypt, c1798. Shadufs being used to raise water from the River Nile. A shaduf is an irrigation tool, originally developed in Ancient Egypt. Plate 6 from Vol II, Arts and Trades of 'Descriptions of Egypt', a book published under the orders of Napoleon in 1822, documenting his military and scientific expedition to Egypt in 1798.
