'The Pope And The Saxon Children', c180. In AD 598, Pope Gregory I sent bishop Augustine to persuade all the Saxons in England to become Christians (pictured). Augustine went on to become the first Archbishop of Canterbury as a result and is considered to be the founder of the English Church.
