The Matterhorn was first climbed in 1865 by Edward Whymper, Charles Hudson, Lord Francis Douglas, Douglas Hadow, accompanied by guides Michel Croz and the two Peter Taugwalders (father and son). Hadow, Croz, Hudson and Douglas were killed in a fall on the descent. From Cassell's Illustrated History of England, Vol IX.
