Explorers with Humboldt's expedition at the basalt cliffs at Regla, Mexico, c1820-1839. German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt's (1769-1859) interests included geophysics, geology and botany and he is sometimes called the founder of ecology. He visited Mexico in 1803-1804 during the course of a five year expedition to Latin America. Plate 60 from Le Costume Ancien et Moderne by Jules Ferrario.
