The Castle and Ross Fountain, Edinburgh, 1924-1926. The ancient stronghold of Castle Rock, an outcrop of volcanic rock, has been fortified since 900 AD. The ornate iron fountain was cast in France and displayed at the Great Exhibition of 1862 in London. Daniel Ross, a Scottish gun manufacturer and philanthropist, purchased it and had it transported, in 122 pieces, to Edinburgh, where it was reassembled in Princes Street Gardens in 1872. A print from Hutchinson's Britain Beautiful, edited by Walter Hutchinson, volume II, 1924-1926.
