Lambton Castle, County Durham, 19th century. Lambton Castle is the ancestral seat of the Lambton family, Earls of Durham. Built in the style of a Norman castle early in the 19th century, it was partially demolished in the 1930s after suffering from subsidence caused by nearby coal mines, ironically the same mines that had generated the wealth to fund the castle's construction.
