Queen Jane interposing between Northumberland and Simon Renard, 1553 (1840). Lady Jane Grey intervening in an argument between the Duke of Northumberland and the Ambassador of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor. A grandniece of Henry VIII, Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed queen on Edward VI's death in 1553 in an attempt to secure a Protestant succession.
