Schoolchildren learning how to rinse their teeth with fluorine, Landskrona, Sweden, 1965. The fluoridation of the water supply to prevent tooth decay aroused considerable controversy after it was first introduced in Sweden in 1952. The practice was declared illegal in 1961 by the Swedish Supreme Administrative Court. The ruling was overturned the following year but Sweden's parliament finally banned fluoridation in 1971.
