Although Sweden was officially non-belligerent during World War II, there was considerable popular support for Sweden's eastern neighbour Finland after the Soviet Union invaded in the Winter War in 1939. Sweden contributed financial and humanitarian aid to Finland, as well as Military supplies and equipment. In addition, some 8700 Swedes volunteered to fight alongside the Finns.
