Ice cream sellers, Market Place, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, c1910. The stall in the foreground belongs to Solari's, who by the sound of the name were probably Italian, as most ice cream manufacturers-sellers were. The people leaning up against the railings of Queen Victoria's statue are eating ice cream from a 'poke' (which supplied the common name for ice cream - Hokey-Pokey, and led to the rhyme which grandmothers were fond of reciting: Hokey-Pokey penny a lump, the more you eat the more you trump!).The picture also shows shops on Beastmarket Hill in the background.
