Exterior view of the Exchange building, Charleston, South Carolina, USA, 1940. Postcard. Completed in 1771, this Georgian building is one of the most important colonial era structures in Charleston. In 1774 representatives from all over the colony of South Carolina met at the Exchange to elect their delegates to the Continental Congress which drafted the Declaration of Independence. During the Revolutionary War the British used it as a barracks and a prison. A grand ball was held inside for George Washington when he visited Charleston in 1791.
