National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, USA, 1940. Postcard. Exterior view at night. The gallery, on the Mall, was established by Congress in 1937, and opened to the public in 1941. The building was designed by John Russell Pope, who later designed the Jefferson Memorial. The basis for the museum's collection was a collection of paintings and sculptures donated to Congress by the financier and art collector Andrew W Mellon.
