Boulder Dam and Lake Mead, Arizona/Nevada, USA, 1940. Postcard showing the lake surrounded by the slopes of the Black Canyon. The dam is in the foreground. Also known as the Hoover Dam, the Boulder Dam was built in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River on the border between Nevada and Arizona between 1931 and 1936. The dam provides hydroelectic power to Arizona, Nevada and California. The reservoir behind the dam is called Lake Mead, after Elwood Mead, who oversaw the dam's construction.
