General Philip Sheridan and family, Nonquitt, Massachusetts, USA, 1888. The General and wife, Irene Rucker Sheridan, seated with their children on the steps of their holiday cottage, left to right Mary, the eldest, Phillip Jr, and the twins Irene and Louise. Also present are the General's brother, Michael V Sheridan and his wife. Sheridan was a Union cavalry general during the American Civil War, playing a prominent role in the battle that led to the Confederate General Robert E Lee's final surrender at Appomattox. He later served in the Indian Wars on the Great Plains. The Sheridan tank and Fort Sheridan army base near Chicago were named in his honour.
