'Sir John Barnard, Lord Mayor 1737', 1738. Sir John was a merchant and politician. As well as Lord Mayor of London, he was MP for the City, Sheriff (1735) and Alderman (1728-1756). On the table behind Sir John are the symbols of office of the Lord Mayor, including the ceremonial sword.
