Tiger's Nest Buddhist monastery, Bhutan. Buildings of the Buddhist monastery of Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) precariously sited on a rocky ledge over 2000 feet above the valley floor. The monastery is a sacred pilgrimage site, being situated near a cave in which the Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, is said to have meditated in the 8th century. The photograph shows the original monastery, which was destroyed by fire in 1987. The buildings on the site today are copies of the originals.
