Johan de Witt, Dutch statesman, 1654, (c1870). De Witt was one of the most influential figures in Dutch politics in the mid 17th century when the Netherlands was at the height of its commercial and military power. He occupied the powerful position of Grand Pensionary of the States of Holland from 1653 until 1672 when the Orangist party seized power and deposed him. He was assassinated shortly afterwards.
