Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, home of the Duke of Northumberland, c1880. Alnwick Castle was built in the late 11th century to defend the northern English border area against incursions by the Scots and Border Reivers. It came into the possession of the Percys, the Earls and Dukes of Northumberland, in 1309. Wood-engraved plates after paintings by Benjamin Fawcett and Alexander Francis Lydon.
