George Washington at the siege of Yorktown, Virginia, 1781 (c1880). The Defeat of the British at Yorktown proved decisive in the American Revolutionary War. It was the last military engagement of any significance in the conflict and two years later, Britain recognised the independence of the United States by signing the Treaty of Paris.
