Silas Deane, 18th century American statesman and diplomat, c1880. Deane (1737-1789) was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress during the American Revolutionary War. In 1776 he was sent to France to persuade the French to provide financial and military aid to assist the American colonies in their bid to secure independence.
