Sir Edward Pakenham leading the attack on New Orleans, 1815 (c1880). The Battle of New Orleans was the final battle of the War of 1812. Technically the war was already over after the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, but the news had not yet reached the other side of the Atlantic. The battle resulted in a decisive American victory, with the British compelled to withdraw from Louisiana. One of the British commanders, Major-General Pakenham, was fatally wounded leading an attack on the American positions. A print from Cassell's History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume II, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880.
