James Monroe, 5th President of the United States, (c1880). After the portrait by AB Durand. Monroe (1758-1831) was president between 1817 and 1825. His presidency is best remembered for his formulation of the Monroe Doctrine, which declared US opposition to European interference in the affairs of any of the independent nations of the Americas.
