John Quincy Adams, 6th President of the United States, (c1880). Adams (1767-1848) was President of the United States from 1825 until 1829. He was one of the principal authors of the Monroe Doctrine, which barred the European powers from colonising or otherwise interfering in the internal affairs of the newly independent nation states in the Americas.
