Murder of White's assistant, c1580s (c1880). A European settler shot with arows by Native Americans. John White (c1540-c1593) was one of the early English colonists in North America. He was sent by Sir Walter Raleigh as artist and illustrator on Sir Richard Grenville's expedition of 1585 and 1586. He was later appointed governor of the ill-fated Roanoke colony.
