Powhatan in state, 1607 (c1880). Powhatan, the Native American chief as he appeared when Captain John Smith was brought to him as a prisoner. Smith said that his life was spared after the intervention of the chief's daughter, Pocahontas, but historians doubt whether the event actually took place, with Smith inventing the tale later after Pocahontas became famous.
