Greenwich Royal Observatory, Greenwich Park, London. The observatory was built by Christopher Wren (1632-1723) on the orders of Charles II with the aim of providing accurate navigation tables and of solving the problem of finding longitude at sea. The building is named after John Flamsteed (1646-1719), the first Astronomer Royal.
