Bastion walls, the Fortezza, Rethymnon, Crete, Greece. The Fortezza is a fortress built by the Venetians, who ruled Crete from 1204 until the Ottoman Turks conquered the island in the mid 17th century. It was constructed in 1590 to protect the town from raids by the Turks and by pirates.
