George Meade, Union general of the American Civil War, (c1880). In the American Civil War, Meade (1815-1872) fought for the Union states at Bull Run and Antietam, after which he was promoted to major-general of volunteers. He led troops at Fredericksburg and at Chancellorville, and in 1863 was given command of the Army of the Potomac. He defeated General Robert E Lee at Gettysburg, but was criticised for failing to press home his advantage. A print from Cassell's History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume III, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880.
