Sir Alexander Cockburn, 12th Baronet, Lord Chief Justice of England, 1875. Cockburn (1802-1880) was involved in some of the most prominent English legal cases of the 19th century, either as advocate or judge. He served as Solicitor General, then Attorney General in the 1850s, and was appointed Chief Justice of the Queen's Bench in 1859. He held the post (renamed Lord Chief Justice in 1875) until his death in 1880. A print from The Illustrated London News, 27th March 1875.
