John William Colenso, Bishop of Natal, 1875. Colenso (1814-1883) became the first Anglican Bishop of Natal in 1853. He became a controversial figure amongst the church hierarchy in Southern Africa because of his views on aspects of biblical teachings and his liberal treatment of the indigenous people. Colenso had a close relationship with members of the Zulu royal family and championed the cause of the Zulus against oppression and territorial encroachment by the Boers.
