Christian IV, King of Denmark, with his eldest son Frederick, (1816). Christian IV (1577-1648) was King of Denmark and Norway from 1588. His eldest son succeeded him as Frederick III (1609-1670) and is remembered as the king who introduced the principle of absolute monarchy to Denmark.
