Schonhut's Butchers, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 1955. In this photograph, Mr George Schonhut can be seen at work. He was the grandson of the founder, who relocated from the German town of Obernhof. The family settled in Mexborough in the years prior to World War I. Despite some persecution stemming from the German origins of his name, Mr Schonhut refused to anglicise the family name. The butchery business flourished for three generations as both retailers and as a wholesaler to other businesses in the area. It is assumed that his colleague with the artificial arms did not lose his limbs during the course of his work.
