Entrance to Croydon Palace, Croydon, Surrey, c1800. Croydon is now in the London borough of Croydon. A man can be seen begging from two figures. Croydon Palace used to be the summer residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury. By the 18th century the palace with its 15th century Great Hall had fallen into disrepair, and it was sold in 1807.
