'Affaires Etrangeres', Gabriel Hanotaux, French statesman, 1896. Hanotaux (1853-1944) was French Foreign Minister from 1894-1898. His colonial policies in Africa were instrumental in causing the dispute between Britain and France known as the Fashoda Incident that occurred in 1898. He is depicted here being watched over by a figure representing the powerful 17th century French statesman Cardinal Richelieu. A print from Vanity Fair, November 12th 1896.
