Mandan village, Upper Missouri, America, 1841. The Mandan are a Native American tribe that historically lived on the banks of the Missouri and its tributaries in what is now North and South Dakota. Unlike the migrant Plains Indians ther lived in permanent villages of circular earth lodges. The Mandan were almost wiped out by a smallpox epidemic in 1837-1838.
