JB Eads' Inter Oceanic Ship Railway, 1884. James Buchanan Eads (1820-1887) was an American engineer and inventor with over 50 patents in his name. He designed this railway to haul ships between the Gulf of Mexico across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the narrowest part of Mexico, but it was never built.
