Tetley shire horses and dray in front of Micklegate Bar, York, North Yorkshire, 1969. The world famous shire horses gave service to the company for 184 years and started their work when Joshua Tetley established his brewery in Leeds in 1822, and used the horses to pull the drays. As deliveries of the barrels started to be made by lorry, the shire horses were kept on for ceremonial and promotional purposes. Carlsberg, the Danish owners of Tetley's decided to retire the horses in August 2006 due to the rising cost of their upkeep. The last horses used to pull the drays were retired to the Bankside Shire Stud in Thurstonland near Holmfirth.
