Waste ready for incineration in giant crane grab jaws, St Helier, Jersey, 1980. Jersey's new incinerator at St Helier opened in the late 1970s in a bid to reduce the amount of landfill in the limited area available on the island. The incinerator became the focus of concerns about the dumping of toxic ash within Jersey, and debate continued about the construction of a new incinerator at La Collette or the exportation of waste for incineration to Brittany in France.
