Fought in October and November 1942, the Battle of El Alamein saw the British and Commonwealth forces of the 8th Army under General Bernard Montgomery defeat the German Afrika Korps commanded by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, turning back the German advance towards Cairo and the Suez Canal.
