The Opera was designed in Neo-Baroque style by Charles Garnier and built between 1861 and 1874 as part of Baron Haussmann's great reconstruction project ordered by Napoleon III. It is one of the two homes of the Opera National de Paris, the other being the Opera Bastille which opened in 1989. Stereoscopic card detail.
