'The Death of Wallenstein', c1880-1882. Bohemian general Albrecht von Wallenstein (1583-1634) commanded the Catholic imperial armies during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) until pressure from German princes persuaded the Habsburg emperor Ferdinand II to replace him with Count Tilly in 1630. He was assassinated by Irish and Scottish members of his retinue after mounting a rebellion against the emperor in 1634.
